Writing, Living, Creating…
My name is Tammy and as a Gen-Xer, I grew I up in the era of technology. Long before Instant Messenger and Email, I was online chatting through a boring green screen on the original instant messenger, muddling my way through an Archie or Veronica search or grabbing a prompt line to do the 80’s version of a text message. I remember Netscape, the first WYSIWYG screens, and the revelation of WordPerfect (look that up my younger friends – it is still around, but back when I started, it looked more like the hand-coded HTML pages than a word processor). I dreamed of the virtual working world from the first time I saw Wargames – the original, not the remake. And, even though The Net showed the dark side of working in isolation, I still wanted it. With every technological leap forward, I kept pace, and as a professional business writer for the past 25 years, I saw the future in working from anywhere, not just within the four walls of a cubicle. Five years ago, I made the leap to working at home part time, then another leap to full time. Today, I work full-time from a home office and the future continues to move online.
Writing…
I have over 25 years of experience in the writing field. I have worked as an in-house writer and project manager in financial organizations, healthcare information technology areas, and technology-based firms. I have also taught technical writing courses at both two-year and four-year colleges and I have a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, a Master of Arts degree in English, with a focus on technical writing, and have completed almost all my courses towards a Ph.D in English. I am a technology geek. I am an enthusiastic first adopter, although not always a pleased one. As an example, my first smartphone was the very first Droid, but I moved to iPhone shortly after and haven’t looked back. I’ve learned all sorts of new things and worked out ways to explain these new and interesting products and services to a wide range of audiences. I want to share what I’ve learned and a little of myself in this blog, including my creative outlets when I need a tangible result of my work. I will share my work, my home, and my personal passions as a Gen Xer living in this Millennial world. My generation may have grown up with technology, but theirs has embraced it as the fabric of their lives and weaved it into our existence.
Living…
I am an avid consumer of blog content and ideas and I am always looking for honest reviews of these ideas, which are sometimes hard to find. I started this blog to share my own experiences with the content I come across and ideas I can share from my own experience to provide perspectives on the digital menagerie. I want to help those of you searching out ideas on living a simpler life in the modern world and help weed through the good and the bad and the in-between and hopefully, save you a little time and struggle in the process.
Creating…
I am also a creative person, using these outlets to help me deal with the very real stresses of being a part of a fast changing and technologically challenging working world. I like to do things which slow me down and provide a tangible result of my labor, so occasionally I will stop the world for a little while to share some DIY tips or sewing projects I use to stay grounded.
